Fitness 101: An Introduction to Fitness

July 11, 2009

You may be one of the millions of people who have never worked out. Or perhaps you used to be a marathon runner back in high school, but life just got too busy and you haven’t hit the track in 20 years. Either way, between your career and family, you just don’t have the time to keep in shape anymore. That’s just how life goes anyway. You’re not a professional athlete, and can’t expect to have the time to spend hours every day to stay in shape. Right?

Wrong.

Staying in shape doesn’t require you to dedicate hours of time to training every day. It doesn’t even require that you workout daily. All it requires is dedication and consistency. Sure, it’s not a walk in the park, but it’s well worth it and if you’re already motivated enough to be reading this site, then chances are you have what it takes to get fit as well.

Why Is Fitness Important?

Everyone has different reasons for why they keep in shape. Rusty and Nate will tell you they train to look good. Vic will tell you he trains to be functionally fit. Chris will tell you he trains for inner peace. Me? I say that the best way to know if something is worthwhile, is to ask someone who has already done it. And if you ask anyone who is fit and works at keeping in shape if it was worth the effort to get there, I guarantee you they’ll tell you yes. That’s proof enough for me that fitness is something we all should be incorporating into our lifestyle.

But I Don’t Enjoy Working Out!

I have a theory that how much you enjoy an activity is often related to how much you succeed at it. You may have tried getting into shape in the past without seeing results fast enough, and then came to the conclusion that you didn’t like it. My answer is to you is to give getting into shape one month before judging whether you like it or not, since a month is about how long it takes to really get the hang of it. I’m positive that once you start feeling stronger and looking good, you’ll start looking forward to your workouts!
