Advanced, Innovative Exercises For Your Core

August 31, 2009

One thing that I really think is important for people to understand when they get into fitness is that there’s no “right” way of working out. Once you understand the basics of which movement targets which muscle group, and that you need resistance to build muscle, the sky is the limit on putting together different exercises and even creating new exercises to build strength.

[The core of the body is the what keeps the body stabilized, similar to what a trunk does for a tree.]

That means that while beginners might need workout programs made out for them to get started, once you gain more knowledge about working out you shouldn’t be afraid to experiment with different techniques and exercises as long as you do it with safety in mind.

I’m actually bringing this up because I like to experiment with exercises that target your core that you can do while hanging from a pull up bar or parallel bars. I wanted to show you guys the different kinds of exercises you can do from hanging from a pull up bar or on parallel bars on an advanced level, and I managed to find a video of just that. Here it is:

Two More Exercises:

On top of what you can see in the video, there are two more exercises you can do to help strengthen your core. They are:

1) The muscle up, where you do a pull up and then finish by pushing yourself into the air and over the pull up bar.

2) Bringing your legs totally straight at a 90 degree angle and leaving them there as long as possible for as many reps as possible.

Don’t Be Afraid of Innovation

Don’t be afraid to innovate and improve on the exercises you see here. After all, no one knows what works best for you as well as you do.

So, do you agree that there is room for innovation with fitness or do you think that people should just stick to basic routines because experimenting takes away from training? Leave a comment and let me know!

  1. I first saw the muscle up a few days ago, as part of a Bar-Barian workout. Talk about a tough move…

  2. Greg – The craziest thing about them is how hard they work your abs. Something you don’t really expect (it looks like it’s all arms.)
