Rafi: This is Rafi from thefitnessadviser.com. I just wanted to say before we rap up this last part of the interview with Dr. Hauser, that one of the reasons I asked Dr. Hauser to do this interview about prolotherapy and platelet rich plasma therapy is that I’ve gotten both of these treatments for a really bad case of Jumpers Knee and they’ve helped me when nothing else would. You can checkout My Story to see more about that.
The point is that these treatments aren’t yet fully accepted as mainstream, even though thousands of people are seeking out platelet rich plasma therapy and prolotherapy and getting them, and healing. I really respect what Dr. Hauser is doing, in allowing himself to be out there, on the internet, getting interviewed and trying to spread the word about these amazing treatments that can potentially cure a lot of chronic pain problems and injuries. I’m also happy to be able to be a part of getting the word out about these amazing medical treatments to the general public and to the fitness community.
Without further ado, here’s Part III of the interview with Dr. Hauser:
Rafi: Can prolotherapy injections and platelet rich plasma therapy injections be alternated?
Dr. Hauser: Can the normal prolotherapy solutions and platelet rich plasma solutions be alternated. Absolutely, I mean a person might start out with a certain solution and it doesn’t work all that good so typically in the office in Oak Park we’ll very quickly switch them to another solution. So there are definitely gradations of solution.
For instance you can have two people with the exact same problem such as a rotator cuff tear and one responds just with a normal, gentle hyper tonic dextrose solution and another one needs human growth hormone or the extract of cod liver oil, sodium oreoyeh(?). So realize that more isn’t necessarily better so it isn’t just “oh doc, give me the strongest most powerful solution”, that isn’t normally better. Most injuries respond with the safest, gentlest solutions.
Rafi: Why hasn’t my orthopedist heard about prolotherapy?
Dr. Hauser: A common question I’m often asked is why hasn’t my orthopedist heard about prolotherapy. Well, I can just tell you in the Chicago land area since the office in Oak Park Illinois, Caring Medical has been doing prolotherapy since 1955. Dr. Hemwall did it from 1955 until he retired in 1996 and I joined him in 1993 so I’ve been doing it since him. Almost every orthopedist in the greater Chicago land area has heard about prolotherapy.
But think about it if you’re in a rural town or in a city that there isn’t a well known prolotherapist. I mean why should the orthopedist hear about prolotherapy. Having said that, platelet rich plasma is gaining in popularity in the orthopedic community so most orthopedics have heard of platelet rich plasma injections. What they don’t realize is platelet rich plasma injections are prolotherapy. So in a sense most orthopedists have heard about prolotherapy.
Rafi: How long should I wait after an injury to get prolotherapy?
Dr. Hauser: A great question that often people ask is how long should I wait after an injury to get prolotherapy. I can just tell you that folks who come to Caring Medical and have had an injury healed by prolotherapy. When they get a new injury, I’ll be honest a lot of them just come in right away. Because a lot of times you know right away if an injury is going to heal or not. If it’s an injury that’s going to heal by itself it just gets better and better everyday.
If after two weeks it’s not better, you know it’s probably not going to get better. I mean you can get physical therapy, try that, you can try herbs, you can try various exercises, but whatever therapy it is it should be getting the injury better and better everyday. So personally, as someone who does a lot of athletics, if I have an injury whether it’s a ligament injury or a tendon injury. As long as it’s getting better everyday I’ll let it heal and curb my athletic training a little bit.
But once it stops getting better I would just get prolotherapy because prolotherapy speeds healing immensely. Even a simple ankle sprain where an athlete would have to curb athletic activities for one month, two months. Yeah, they got prolotherapy and in a week or two weeks probably they’ll be fine. So more and more people, especially athletes since they want to get better quickly, use prolotherapy sooner rather than later.
Rafi: That raps up the last part of the interview with Dr. Hauser, and thanks again to Dr. Hauser for an amazing interview.
