Fitness Tips on How to Do More Pull Ups Leads to…Fitness Blogger Competition 2009

August 10, 2009

Huge Announcement!!! Read The Whole Thing!!!

Even though I haven’t been actively discussing exactly what’s been going on with my Jumpers Knee injury, I’ve been very active in treating it. I’ve had both protherapy and platelet rich plasma therapy or prp shots, have been doing physical therapy, and tomorrow I’m having what will hopefully be my last prp shot and with God’s help will be on my way to a complete recovery.

One of the consequences of the injury was that recently, I had to stop exercising completely and concentrate 100% on rehabilitating my legs. This especially hit me after I wrote an article on Going From Zero to Twenty Seven Pull Ups. Because I’m temporarily not at my own place right now so that I can be close to where I have to get the prp, I haven’t had access to a pull up bar and have no idea how many I’m currently able to do. I’ve literally scouted every playground in a 10 mile radius of where I’m staying without finding one pull up bar!

That being said, where there’s a will, there’s a way. Besides, how can I call myself The Fitness Adviser, give fitness tips, and write about Staying Strong While Healing without going the extra mile myself and showing you guys how it’s done? So in that spirit, I’m now announcing Fitness Blogger Competition 2009. This is a challenge to every other Fitness Blogger on the planet to see which one of us is capable of doing the most pull ups. Here’s a few reasons why I’m putting out this challenge:

1) I’m going to be training for this despite not being completely mobile the next couple of weeks because of the prp shot I’m getting (the next few days I’ll be on crutches and then I have to wear a knee brace) to raise awareness that it’s possible to continue getting in shape despite a bad injury.

2) This is an excellent opportunity for people to see which of the fitness bloggers are the real deal and who are the posers.

3) Because who doesn’t like some friendly competition to spice things up a bit and give us all some motivation to keep training?

Here are the rules for the competition:

1) You have to put an unedited video of you doing pull ups showing your whole body on your site. Kicking isn’t allowed.

2) Don’t cheat.

Even though every single fitness blogger on the planet is allowed and encouraged to enter this competition, there are a few bloggers I’d like to personally issue this challenge to:

1) Coach Adam Steer – You’re the body weight coach, so this contest is in your court. Show everyone what you’re made of and get in the competition.

2) Vic Magary from Gym Junkies – You’ve talked about getting primal in your workouts. What’s more primal than giving your all to win in a competitive setting?

3) Rusty Moore at FitnessBlackBook – You’ve helped show people how to keep in shape while they age. We know you’re over 40, so just by entering this competition you’ll show you’re the real deal and you’re still in the game.

4)  Zach Even-Esh – We all know the Underground Strength Coach is all about competition, so show what your training method is made of and get in on this.

5) Steve Maxwell – Steve, you might not have anything to prove…but can you resist the temptation of showing us youngin’s how it’s done?

6) Israel Lagares – Yeah, we know you’ve been losing weight and can do burpees…but are you ready for the pull up bar?

To give everyone time to train, the competition ends September 14th 2009. Who’s in?

  1. Cool idea. As much as I’d like to participate, I’m still working on getting chin ups. I was finally able to do one unassisted chin up a few weeks ago. I am no where near able to do unassisted chin ups, and won’t be for a while. I can do a few band assisted pull ups, but that doesn’t count so I’m going to have to respectfully decline participating since it really doesn’t make any sense for me to be in on this.

I’ll stick to my ban assisted chin ups and pull ups and when I can mess with unassisted pull ups later in the year, I’ll hit you up!!! I may still put up a vid of me trying to do a pull up just to show ya what I’m working with…

    Thanks!

  2. Israel,

Even if you can only do one now, the competition is in a month so hopefully you’ll be able to do more by then. Either way, you participating would give encouragement to all those trying to lose weight and it would still be great to have you in it!

  3. I am in! I have been doing the pushups and abs programs on my iTouch so why not start doing it with pull ups! Are you going to post about the confirmed list of participants?

  4. Okay, deal. I’m in. I cant do any unassited pull ups at the moment, but hopefully I will be able to crank one out in a month. We shall see!!!

  5. Rafi,

Not over 40 yet…was born in 1969 and turn 40 this year…but I’m probably the oldest guy on the list.

As far as chinup competition goes. I rarely train over 5 reps in anything. I do 5 sets of 5 with chinups, but could maybe try and see what I could get up to.

I’m 6’3″ with freakishly long arms, so not going to hit anywhere near 27! What is weird is I suck at chinups, but I’m strong as hell at rows.

Not sure if I can get a video of this…we will see.

    Rusty

  6. Awesome idea Rafi!

I’d like to throw my name into the hat on this one. Not like I’m a threat but I like a challenge and would relish beating Rusty;)

May I suggest Adam be forced to due this with one hand tied behind his back in order to keep it close:)

    Mike

  7. Jeremy – Ha, leave it to the “digital weight loss” guy to use an iTouch (I’m going to admit to not knowing what that is!) to train for a pull up competition. Not sure yet if I’ll post a confirmed list of participants, but right now I’m leaning towards posting a list of everyone’s videos at the end with permission of course.

Israel – Awesome Israel, you’re a real inspiration for fat loss! If you need any tips to help you succeed in reaching that pull up just let me know.

Rusty – Yeah you actually do have really long arms. :) But you do still have a month to train and 3 sets of 5 isn’t bad at all. Besides…you know you can’t resist the competition!

Mike – Ha, nice to have you in it Mike. I’d imagine Adam is pretty good but I wouldn’t underestimate Vic, Zach, or Steve either…not to mention that while I may be injured, I’m in it to win it (us guys do need our bragging rights). ;)

  8. I’m not participating now, but maybe in a half year’s time. Can’t wait to enjoy the videos, though! It’s fun to see people red in the face. :-)

  9. Sophia – Yeah the videos should be fun to watch!
