As we approach the vacation season, usually awash with holiday parties, it got me thinking about how workers are rewarded. Definitely one of the chief reasons for hosting a company holiday party is to reward workers for their tough work and dedication, and there might be money reasons as well.  ;
however , a holiday party does something else too. It creates a space for employees and management to come together not as employees, but as friends. It provides an opportunity for folks to come together and luxuriate in the company of the people you’re employed with without worrying about the bottom line, which is something that might not happen much throughout the year. Sure there might be financial benefits ( see the article linked above ), but this is primarily attained by making a little bit of goodwill that goes a ways. It lets your people know that you put a value on them and their work. So when I see that companies are deciding against doing a party thanks to the economy I fret about the message that this sends to  ; staff, many of whom doubtless anticipate and expect some kind of year end party. When times are hard, which indubitably is the case in numerous industries, it’s especially crucial to show workers you care.
If you usually do an extravagant party, naturally it’s comprehensible that you’d cut back a little bit, but don’t lose the party altogether. Do it smaller, easier and smarter. You can change the scale without spoiling the event. If you normally hire a celebrity comic, for example, think about employing local talent. If you normally do an indulgent meal, do a buffet, or maybe a potluck. My point is do something. If you can afford to use holiday party entertainment, I’d definitely recommend it. Using a corporate comedian is a great way to get people’s's minds off the economy for 45-60 minutes and it gives your guests a common experience to chat ( and joke ) about for coming months and leaves everyone feeling slightly better ( just in time for the vacations ).
